Fikrinaldi, Mansyur (2025) THE USE OF ENGLISH IN THE MAKE-UP TUTORIAL VIDEOS OF YOUTUBERS WITH DIFFERENT ENGLISH EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUNDS. S1 thesis, Universitas Andalas.
Abstract
This study focuses on Indonesian-English code-mixing (CM) in makeup tutorial videos. It aims to identify the various types of code-mixing based on Muysken’s (2000) theory. The research employs non-participatory observation and quantitative methods for data analysis, resulting in a descriptive dataset. The study analyzed 79 instances of code-mixing from six YouTube videos. The videos were categorized into two groups: three from YouTubers with a non-English educational background and three from YouTubers with an academic background in Indonesian and English. The analysis identified three types of code-mixing: insertion, found in 22 instances (27.84%); alternation, found in 14 instances (17.72%); and congruent lexicalization, found in 43 instances (54.43%). Congruent lexicalization emerged as the most dominant type in the YouTube videos. Additionally, the study presented statistical data analysis regarding the correlation between code-mixing usage and educational background, revealing that these two variables do not correlate.
