Abstract

In the rapidly developing digital era, as one of the most popular platforms, Instagram not only functions to share photos, but also functions as a medium to build perceptions of beauty and fashion trends in its users. This study aims to analyze the acceptance and interpretation of beauty standards shown by fashion influencers, especially through the Instagram account @raniaayamin, by their followers. The background of this study is the phenomenon of the increasing role of influencers in determining the ideal image of perfection in women through visualization of clothing styles, makeup, and bodies, which indirectly leads to the emergence of certain beauty standards in society. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach method with a purposive sampling technique, and the theory used is Stuart Hall's reception theory to produce meaning as a form of acceptance, negotiation, or rejection of the consumption of beauty standards that they do. Through the results of the research analysis, it shows that based on Stuart Hall's reception theory, followers of the @raniaayamin account are in the dominant reading order of the majority receiving implicit messages about beauty that contain self-confidence, intellectuality, and self-expression through fashion, while other negotiation readings realign the understanding of the meaning of the content based on the personal context but receive positive values from the content. This research is expected to provide an understanding of how beauty standards are perceived differently by audiences, as well as being a reference for studies on social media communication and identity construction through fashion influencers.
