Parental Ambition and Symbolic Violence: A Representation of Bourdieu's Theory in the Korean Drama Sky Castle

<p xss&equals;removed>Education plays an important role in South Korean society&period; It is useful for social m<span xss&equals;removed>obility and to raise social status&period; Therefore&comma; parents encourage their children to be h<&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>ighly educated to raise their social status&period; This research analyzes the form of s<&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>ymbolic violence in the Korean drama Sky Castle using Bourdieu's theory&comma; which <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>combines forms of capital and habitus as a tool to dominate&period; A qualitative approach <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>is used with Roland Barthes semiotic narrative structure analysis to identify <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>concepts which include habitus&comma; capital&comma; and arena&period; This research has reveals that <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>Sky Castle represents educational inequality through cultural&comma; social and symbolic <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>capital&comma; and how the unequal distribution of capital reinforces social stratification <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>and reproduces symbolic violence in the education system&period; Using Pierre Bourdieu's <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>perspective&comma; this research shows that education&comma; which is supposed to be a tool for <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>social mobility&comma; instead functions as a mechanism for class reproduction&comma; where <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>only individuals with certain capital can access success&period; The play also reveals how <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>the hierarchical education system creates the illusion of meritocracy&comma; so that <&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>individuals from lower social classes accept inequality as natural&comma; even though this i<&sol;span><span xss&equals;removed>nequality is the result of an unjust social structure<&sol;span><&sol;p>
