Abstract

Sexual violence has an impact on multiple aspects of the lives of survivors of sexual violence. This study aims to analyze the construction of the meaning of sexual violence from the perspective of survivors. The theory used in this study is the phenomenological theory by Alfred Schutz to explore the experiences of survivors of sexual violence through the concepts of because-motive and in-order-to-motive. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. In this study, the sampling technique was carried out using the purposive sampling technique, informants selected by researchers who survived sexual violence with the criteria of an age range of 20-25 years, both victims of verbal and non-verbal violence and in cyberspace and in the real world. The data collection technique was in the form of interviews, and the data validity technique used the source triangulation method by comparing one source with another. The data analysis technique used the interactive model from Miles and Huberman. The results of this study indicate that the construction of the meaning of survivors of sexual violence is different from one another. This is related to the differences in sexual violence experienced by informants. Informants as communicators construct meaning through two types of motives in accordance with phenomenological theory. The first is because-of-motive which shows the traumatic experiences experienced by informants in the social environment of society, family, and school. Second, in-order-to-motive which shows how survivors of sexual violence encourage themselves to rise from their slump as resistance.
