Abstract (Abstrak)

Introduction : Therapeutic mannitol has shown beneficial effects on prognosis and mortality in traumatic brain injury patients, especially with improved intracranial pressure.
Objectives : This study aims to investigate the relationship between mannitol administration and the distribution width of red blood cells in traumatic brain injury in Wistar rats.
Methods : This research was conducted using a laboratory experimental method on mice with a post-test control group design. There were two treatment groups and one control group. The study was conducted at the Laboratory Animal Faculty, Medical University Hasanuddin, for a period of 14 days in the month of February 2024. The estimated sample size for this study was determined using the Federer formula. The minimum sample size for each group was 9 mice, making a total of 27 mice for the research. The analysis used was one-way ANOVA (analysis of variance) and the Post Hoc Test using the LSD method for parametric data.
Results : During the pre-treatment RDW_1 assessment, group I had the highest mean RDW results, while group III had the lowest mean. After 24 hours post-treatment (RDW_2), group II had the lowest RDW value. Missing values in group III led to the lowest mean RDW value in that group. Analysis of the relationship between treatment and RDW value showed a p-value > 0.05 for all data, regardless of collection time and treatment group. In the head injury group not given mannitol, one death occurred, while there were no deaths in the group given mannitol. Although an RD of -0.111 was found in the group given mannitol, this result was not statistically significant (p = 1.0).
Conclusions : The administration of mannitol did not show a significant relationship with the distribution width of red blood cells in cases of traumatic brain injury in Wistar rats. Additionally, although there was an increased risk of death in cases of traumatic brain injury in mice that were not given mannitol, this finding was not statistically significant.
