Abstract
Poverty has become a complex problem for every economy in the world. Eradication or efforts to reduce poverty is one of the main focuses of the government in each region because it covers various aspects of people's lives and welfare. This study aims to analyze the influence of population, education level, open unemployment rate, number of MSMEs, and life expectancy on the poverty rate on the island of Sumatra during 2016-2021 using panel data regression. The results of the study using the selected model, namely Random Effects, showed that the unemployment rate had a positive effect on the poverty level, while the number of MSMEs and life expectancy had a negative effect on the poverty level. Meanwhile, the population and education level have no effect on the poverty level on the island of Sumatra. The government in each region is expected to be able to encourage the economy of the lower middle class community, one of which is by providing direct capital assistance to MSME actors. It is hoped that these SMEs can absorb more workers. In addition, the quality of public health facilities also needs to be improved, so that they can work well and have high productivity and avoid poverty.
